Background

Before entering politics, LaCivita served in the United States Marine Corps, achieving the rank of Sergeant and seeing action in the first Gulf War, where he was decorated twice, including receiving a Purple Heart for wounds received in action. A graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, he is married with two grown children.

LaCivita got his start as a GOP political strategist in the 1990s, working on George Allen's successful congressional and gubernatorial campaigns. He served as Political Director for former Governor Allen, as well as Assistant Secretary of Administration, a cabinet post in which he had oversight of five state agencies. That combination of campaign work and government-facing experience gave him an early fluency in both electoral mechanics and institutional politics.

In 2004, the Gulf War veteran became a media adviser to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, a political organization that helped sink the presidential campaign of Democrat John Kerry and produced the term "swiftboating," meaning an unfair or untrue political attack. During the 2004 presidential campaign, LaCivita served as consultant and principal media advisor to the Swift Boat Veterans, writing and producing the group's memorable and controversial television commercials. The episode made LaCivita a nationally known figure and established his reputation for aggressive, high-stakes messaging — a reputation that has followed him ever since.

LaCivita has twice served as the National Political Director for the National Republican Senatorial Committee. He has also served as a senior consultant to the Republican National Committee and played a key leadership role in the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland, where he was responsible for the Rules Committee and floor operations. During the Obama era, LaCivita ran Republican congressional and state legislative campaigns, and in 2020 he joined the pro-Trump Preserve America PAC, later becoming chief strategist of Trump's MAGA super PAC.

Public Role in the Second Trump Administration

Co-Managing the 2024 Campaign

In 2022, LaCivita joined Donald Trump's 2024 presidential campaign as co-campaign manager. He shared that role with Susie Wiles, now White House Chief of Staff, in what became an unusually disciplined and operationally coherent operation by Trump campaign standards. As co-campaign manager, LaCivita was recognized by Bloomberg for bringing "discipline and professionalism" to the campaign. His role encompassed overall strategy, message development, and coordination with the RNC. In March 2024, LaCivita was appointed as Chief Operating Officer of the Republican National Committee, a position that allowed him to integrate the party's organizational infrastructure directly with Trump's campaign operation ahead of the general election.

Staying Outside the Administration

After getting Trump re-elected, LaCivita chose to stay in the private sector. Unlike his co-manager Susie Wiles, who moved into the White House, LaCivita did not take a formal administration post. Instead, he rapidly built a wide-ranging network of advisory and consulting engagements that positioned him as an influential figure in the broader Trump political ecosystem without the constraints of a government role.

In the United States, LaCivita was appointed to crypto giant Coinbase's advisory council in January 2025; serves as senior adviser to Building America's Future, the Elon Musk-funded Republican PAC; advises America250, the non-partisan body managing celebrations of the nation's semiquincentennial, thanks to an appointment by Trump; and was made a commissioner for the American Battle Monuments Commission. He also joined the Republican public affairs firm Michael Best Strategies as a consultant. LaCivita expanded his influence in Republican digital infrastructure by joining the board of directors of WinRed, the party's primary online fundraising platform, effective October 14, 2025, serving alongside pollster Tony Fabrizio and digital strategist Matt Lira to guide its operations and growth.

Lobbying Activity

LaCivita is a lobbyist who lobbied for 71 clients in 2025. That volume reflects how quickly he converted his campaign prominence into commercial demand, with corporations, trade associations, and advocacy groups seeking access to a strategist with a direct line to the Trump orbit. His expertise extends to advising Fortune 100 companies, trade associations, third-party organizations, and issue advocacy groups.

Recent Developments

LaCivita's post-campaign period has not been without friction. In late 2024, the Daily Beast published a series of reports on the fees flowing to his firm, Advancing Strategies LLC, during the campaign. The Daily Beast reported that LaCivita and his company were paid $22 million over two years leading up to the election, a figure that was reduced in later reporting to $19.2 million. LaCivita claimed in court filings that the vast majority of these funds were used for campaign advertising expenses, and he filed suit alleging two counts of defamation and one of conspiracy to injure another in trade, business, or profession, seeking compensatory and punitive damages. LaCivita subsequently halted his legal action, despite having initially posted combative statements on social media about pursuing the case before a jury. The Daily Beast did not retract the story, issue an apology, or make any cash payment.

His overseas consulting work also attracted scrutiny. According to the Wall Street Journal, LaCivita is advising Sali Berisha, a former Albanian prime minister who faces corruption charges and has been sanctioned by the United States. That engagement raised questions about whether Trump-aligned operatives were using the political moment to pursue foreign clients whose interests run counter to U.S. government positions.

On the domestic campaign front, LaCivita signed on to assist several Republican Senate races heading into the 2026 midterms. LaCivita joined Senator Lindsey Graham's reelection campaign as a senior adviser, with Graham's campaign announcing the addition to solidify the senator's connections with the president as other Republicans weigh potential primary challenges. He also advised Senator John Cornyn's primary effort in Texas, which ended in a notable setback: no candidate reached a majority in the March 2026 primary, President Trump endorsed Ken Paxton in May 2026, and Paxton defeated Cornyn by roughly 63.5 to 36.5 percent in the runoff.

Outlook

LaCivita enters the back half of Trump's second term as a well-compensated and widely connected private-sector operator rather than a government official. That positioning gives him flexibility but also means his influence depends on continued access and relevance within a Trump world that can shift quickly. The Cornyn primary loss in Texas was a rare public stumble, demonstrating that even well-funded establishment efforts backed by Trump-era talent can be overtaken by the former president's direct intervention. How LaCivita navigates the remainder of the 2026 midterm cycle — particularly his work on the Graham campaign in South Carolina — will test whether his post-campaign brand holds.

His broader commercial activity, spanning lobbying, corporate advisory work, digital infrastructure, and international consulting, positions him less as a traditional party operative and more as a political entrepreneur capitalizing on his 2024 role. That model is sustainable as long as Trump remains the dominant force in Republican politics, but it carries the reputational and legal risks already evidenced by the Daily Beast litigation and the Berisha advisory work. LaCivita remains one of a small number of people who can credibly claim to have built the operational architecture of Trump's return to power, and that credential is likely to keep him in demand well beyond any single election cycle.
